Launch of InnovaLatino: Fostering Innovation in Latin America

Fundación Telefónica, INSEAD and the OECD Development Centre hosted the launch of the InnovaLatino report at Casa de América in Madrid last May 4, 2011. The event gathered high representatives from the three organizing institutions, as well as prominent Ibero-american Innovators such as Chef Ferran Adrià Acosta (Spain), Rafael Rangel, Dean of Sistema Tecnológico de Monterrey (Mexico), Raul Rivera, President of the ForoInnovación Foundation (Chile) or Rodrigo Baggio, President of Comitê para Democratização da Informática (Brazil). Javier Nadal, Executive Vice-President of Fundación Telefónica gave the opening speech. The event ended with a keynote speech by Juan Tomás Hernani Burzaco, Spain’s General Secretary for Innovation.

The InnovaLatino team was represented at the first Latin American regional seminar on Open Innovation on 23, November 2011, in São Paulo. Organized by Brazil’s Open Innovation Centre (OIC) and Fundação Dom Cabral (FDC), this event seeks to disseminate best practices in open innovation, connect practitioners and develop supporting networks.

Lourdes Casanova participated on November 21 to a conference on Latin America’s new dynamic, where she presented the main results of the InnovaLatino report. The event was co-organized by Friends of Europe, @LIS2 – The Alliance for the Information Society Program and the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean. It brought together policy makers from Latin American countries and high rank representatives from International organizations and EU institutions. Panelists included, among others, Alicia Bárcena, Executive Secretary of United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Alejandro Cruz, Minister of Science and Technology of Costa Rica, Cezar Alvarez, Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Communication of Brazil, Christian Leffler, Managing Director for the Americas of the European External Action Service, Jolita Butkeviciene, Director for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Directorate General for EuropeAid Development and Cooperation (DEVCO), and José Ignacio Salafranca Sánchez-Neyra, European Parliament Co-President of the Euro-Latin America Parliamentary Assembly and Speaker of the European People’s Party group in the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

EABIS 10th Annual Colloquium – Fontainebleau, October 28, 2011

This year, the EABIS annual colloquium, which took place on 26-28 October, laid a special emphasis on Innovation in developing countries. The main findings of InnovaLatino were presented by Lourdes Casanova.

Presentation of InnovaLatino in Peru – Lima, October 20-21, 2011

Lourdes Casanova was invited to participate in a round-table session on Innovation and Global Latin American firms during the XIV Iberoamerican Congress of Technological Management (Congreso Latino-Iberoamericano de gestión tecnológica) on October 20, 2011. The key findings of InnovaLatino were of course at the centre of the discussions. The next day, she was invited to give a presentation at Universidad del Pacifico, Peru’s leading University in business management and Economics.

Lourdes Casanova, from INSEAD, participated in a round-table dedicated to innovation, trade and investment along with Karel De Gucht, EU Commissioner for Trade, Juan Pablo De Laiglesia Spanish Secretary for Latin America, Henrique de Campos Meirelles Governor of the Central Bank of Brazil and Iñaki Urdangarín, Chairman of Telefónica International USA and Co-Chairman of the Mercosur European Union Business Forum (MEBF).
